Job Summary
The Director of Automation Engineering will leverage advanced engineering expertise to drive automation solutions across NAPA's supply chain network. This role will focus on designing, implementing, and optimizing automated systems and new building launch to enhance efficiency, productivity, and operational excellence within our distribution centers and logistics operations.This role will be pivotal in developing and deploying cutting-edge automation technologies to transform NAPA’s supply chain into a competitive advantage. The Director will be responsible for leading a team of Automation Engineers in the implementation of automated systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring the seamless activation of new network buildings, echelons & technologies into our supply chain network.
Responsibilities
Automation System Design and Implementation:
Lead the deployment of innovative automation solutions, including storage systems, material handling equipment (MHE), and other automated technologies (GTP)
Conduct comprehensive assessments of current operations to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
Develop and document technical specifications, engineering standards, and operational procedures for automated systems.
Lead and provide support for system and automation Testing (FAT, UAT etc.)
Providing guidance on machine level controls, WCS, and WES systems and activations. Partner with company IT peers on bridges to WMS and ERP systems.
Provide leadership, mentorship and coaching to junior level Automation Engineers and peer teams. Oversight and approval of junior level engineering deliverables.
Building Activation, Permitting and Execution:
Oversee the activation and execution of automation projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints.
Provide technical oversight, CFT leadership, and commissioning support for all engineering projects aimed at increasing capacity, throughput, and productivity through technology
Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external vendors to secure necessary resources and manage project timelines.
Provide permitting support & ensuring on time building launch
Optimization and Continuous Improvement:
Perform engineering analyses on automation systems to support project goals
Implement and refine engineering designs to reduce redundanciesand enhance overall system efficiency.
Regularly evaluate automation system performance and iterate designs for continuous improvement.
Troubleshoot automaton systems, working closely with vendors and suppliers of technologies.
Leadership and Collaboration:
Lead direct reports and cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of automated solutions, ensuring alignment with broader supply chain strategies.
Collaborate with CFT engineering/special projects/ops and provide technical guidance to support new building launch
Partner with IT, Automation vendors, etc. and other external partners to support network operations and enhance system capabilities.
Adhere to Project budget & Timeline
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field.
12+ years of experience in supply chain engineering with a focus on automation (Distribution, Fulfillment, or Manufacturing).
Proven track record in designing and implementing automation solutions.
Strong analytical skills with proficiency in engineering economics, simulation modeling, and advanced data analytics.
Experience in developing engineering standards, productivity rates, and process improvement initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to lead small to medium-sized engineering and project execution teams.
Experience with GTP (Goods to Person) technology is preferred.
Project Management Experience handling large scale budgets ($20MM+)
Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering design tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering or an MBA is preferred.
PMP Certification
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
Physical Demands / Working Environment
Work occasionally performed in warehouse and construction environments.
Ability to travel as needed, up to 50%.
