Sales & Use Tax Senior Analyst

Job Summary

The Senior Sales Tax Analyst / IT Specialist plays a critical role in managing sales and use tax compliance and exemption processes across multiple electronical systems. This position is a key liaison between the Sales & Use Tax team, other internal departments (IT, AP, AR), and outsourced service providers. The role will provide essential support for tax audits by assisting with documentation and research activities and will be responsible for creating and maintaining taxability matrices as well as performing tax research.

Additionally the role will consult on exemption management for both customers and vendors, and will be training team members and other stakeholders on exemption management processes and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • · Act as a subject matter expert and consult on exemption certificate processes within the Exemption Management tool, company ERP, and Point-of-Sales systems for both customers and vendors to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
  • · Collaborate with IT and data teams to automate audit reporting processes and improve data efficiency and integrity.
  • · Improve, develop, and maintain sales tax compliance reports and analytics to support internal reviews and external audits.
  • · Provide expert input in the implementation of Tax Decision Maker (TDM) tools for purchases and automation of tax rate updates within Point-of-Sale systems.
  • · Conduct detailed taxability research to determine the appropriate tax treatment for products, services, and transactions.
  • · Assist in pulling and compiling comprehensive audit documentation in response to requests from tax authorities or internal auditors.
  • · Build and maintain taxability matrices to guide taxability decisions across various jurisdictions and product lines.
  • · Assist in the creation and maintenance of user guides, process documents, and best practice manuals related to sales tax exemption and audit functions.
  • · Stay current with changing tax laws, rules, and regulations affecting sales and use tax obligations.
  • · Facilitate effective communication and resolution of tax-related issues across departments and external partners.

Core Competencies

  • · Technical expertise with report writing languages/tools (e.g., SQL, Crystal Reports, Power BI, Power Query, Tableau).
  • · Strong knowledge of sales and use tax rules and exemption certificate management.
  • · Ability to conduct thorough tax research and interpret complex regulations.
  • · Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with multiple departments and external vendors.
  • · Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • · Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under audit deadlines.

Qualifications

  • · Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • · Experience working with tax compliance software, ERP systems, and business intelligence/reporting tools.
  • · Proven experience in implementations, report development and data analysis
  • · Minimum 5 years of experience in sales & use tax compliance, exemption management, or related tax roles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Avalara.
  • · Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft.
  • · CMI Candidate or desire to obtain (Certified Member of Institute for Professionals in Taxation)
